Big Brother Recap: Double Eviction

Nothing turns the Big Brother house upside down quite like a surprise double eviction. Because it all plays out live, we get to see very little of the houseguests playing the game in fast-forward, but there was enough tension in the moments we did see to fill three seasons of the show? So, who was left standing when the dust cleared? And who will join Brendon in the jury house? Let's find out.But first: I guess I've never noticed in the 10 seasons I've been watching the show, but does the studio audience always look so robotic while smiling and clapping. It's been even more distracting than usual this season, which makes me wonder if it's gotten worse. Anyway...We pick up immediately after Jeff backdoored Daniele, who vows to campaign hard to stay, no matter if that means her friend Kalia has to go home. Confident that she has Porsche's vote, she begins to work on Shelly to see if she can persuade this season's biggest snake to slither back to Daniele's side of the house. Daniele makes a compelling argument: Jordan and Rachel are almost definite contenders for the final two because whoever is left in the game would take Jordan and Rachel to guarantee a win. (It's unlikely the jury would give Jordan another $500,000 and, well, everybody hates Rachel.) That said, neither Shelly or Daniele can stomach the thought of giving Rachel, "a completely disgusting human being" $50,000. So, Shelly decides to secure another swing vote. She first goes after Adam by explaining that as long as they are on Team Jeff and Jordan, they will lose out in the end. (There's no way that Jeff or Jordan would chose either Adam or Shelly for the finals.) Adam agrees, but he trusts Jeff and Jordan whereas he believes Daniele will eventually turn on him. (He's right, but also, Adam hasn't made any decisions for himself in this game. Or as Daniele says, "Adam uses Jeff's brain.")So, Shelly goes to work on Rachel the best way possible: She makes Rachel believe Jeff caused Brendon's eviction. Shelly tells Rachel that Jeff threw the power of veto (which is true) rather than trying to win and save Brendon. Rachel suggests that if Daniele stayed, she and Jeff would continue to fight, which would allow Rachel to not be a target for at least another week . "Who woulda thunk?" Daniele asks. "I just got a glimmer of hope in red extensions and furry boots."Unfortunately, that glimmer wasn't bright enough. Although Julie informs viewers that the house exploded earlier in the day when Shelly revealed that she has switched sides of the house, she was unable to sway Adam and Rachel. So, Daniele is evicted by a 3-2 vote. She has no regrets, and she is able to laugh off that Rachel calls her a an "arrogant, rude, horrible bi---" in her goodbye message. Here's what I don't get: Why would Shelly so publicly flip sides? I understand she believes she can't beat Jeff and Jordan in the end, but why not slowly turn against them instead of clearly flipping sides. How does anyone trust her now that she's proven she'll drop when it best suits her? What happens next is a blur of competitions and commercials. (Seriously, it's like they packed in a week's worth of ads as well!) First up is the Head of Household competition, which tests the houseguests memory of events of the summer. It ultimately comes down to Kalia and Jordan, and Kalia pulls out the victory. Moments later, she rather unsurprisingly nominates Rachel and Jeff for eviction. So, it comes down to the veto competition. Based on random draw, everyone plays except Jordan, which isn't a good thing for Jeff. The game is simple: Retrieve two clown shoes from a giant pit of plastic balls first and you win. Rachel jumps out to the early lead, but Porsche, Shelly and Adam even things up. Jeff finally gets his first shoe but moments later Porsche finds her second and strolls on to win the veto. (She kept saying she wanted to win something!)At the veto ceremony, neither Rachel nor Jeff begs for the veto, which is smart since Porsche probably isn't going to use it anyway. And, indeed, she doesn't. We don't get to see whatever last-ditch pleas are made, except for a brief snippet of Jeff asking Shelly for a clean start. She refuses, saying Jordan won't even speak to her. (Well, why would she, traitor?) Jeff begs Shelly to respect how he has played the game and what he and Jordan have done for her. (While it's a nice sentiment, you can't blame Shelly for looking out for herself. Teaming with Jeff doesn't lead to money in the end for Shelly. Sad but true for Jeff/Jordan fans.)So, the vote comes down to a 2-2 tie. (Porsche and Shelly vote to evict Jeff while Adam and a teary-eyed Jordan vote to evict Rachel.) That means HOH Kalia makes the tie-breaking vote, and in the interest of her own game, she votes out the biggest threat: Jeff is evicted. He's obviously upset in his quick chat with Julie. And perhaps for good reason: He was evicted by the votes of a floater. You would think he would have learned two summers ago, when he was almost instantly evicted after backdooring Russell. Looks like when Jeff makes big moves, he goes home. As I said last night, I think keeping Daniele around one more week would have been the right move for Jeff. Not saying she wouldn't have booted him in the double eviction if given the chance, but the way it went down, this result was almost predictable. The real takeaway is this: From here on out, if you want to stay, you have to win competitions. So, what did you think of the double eviction? How much crap do you think Daniele will give Jeff in the jury house? Who do you want to win the next HOH? Who do you think will win? Vote in our poll and share your comments below. show less

D23: Pixar reveals new details for Toy Story short

While all remains quiet on the possibility of Toy Story 4, Pixar have thrown fans of Woody and Buzz a not inconsiderable bone in the form of an upcoming short to precede The Muppets.Entitled Small Fry, the short follows in the footsteps of Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation in welcoming back the entire gang for another slice of animated fun. Attendees at this weekend's D23 expo were treated to a small clip which gave away a few of the plot points involved. This time around, Buzz finds himself left behind at a fast food restaurant and must find his own way home. Nothing revolutionary there then, with the old "lost toy" angle one that we've seen a few times before. However, there should still be plenty of fun to be had in the form of the new characters he meets along the way. One notable new addition will be a mermaid voiced by the ever-hilarious Jane Lynch, she of Glee and Role Models. The Muppets opens Stateside on November 23. UK fans waiting for their next fix of toy-based goodness will have a little longer to wait, with the film set to arrive on February 10 2012. As for the next full-length Toy Story, well we'll just have to wait and see...

Chasing $50 Million, Midnight in Paris Set to Expand Again

Word just over the transom at Movieline HQ has announced Sony Pictures Classics’ plans to give Midnight in Paris one final push to end the summer, expanding the film once again over 1,000 screens as it pursues the $50 million milestone — by far the best domestic gross ever for a Woody Allen film. Paris is actually likely to cross that threshold sometime in the next 24 to 48 hours; it had reached $49.8 million by the time the sun rose this morning, and on Monday, it dipped below a six-figure daily gross ($98,766) for the first time since the week it opened — when it was on six screens. Today Paris occupies 328 screens, but that will go up to around 500 under Sony Classics’ expansion plan set for Aug. 26. Its previous peak came the week of June 17, when it held down 1,038 screens for a total gross of $7.5 million. The burning question now: Can Paris reach $60 million domestic to go with its $33 million (and counting) internationally? That’s the obvious goal, and why not? All the more loot to spend on the Oscar campaign. [Figures via Box Office Mojo]

Boyfriend Accused Of Insider Trading Ahead of Disney-Marvel Deal

The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a complaint today against a California man who allegedly used confidential information about Disney's planned acquisition of Marvel Entertainment -- obtained from his girfriend, a Disney employee -- to buy up Marvel stock options before the August 2009 sale and collect $192,000 after the deal was made public and Marvel shares soared. The complaint said that Toby G. Scammell got the insider information from his girlfriend's BlackBerry and used some cash for his purchase from the account of his older brother, who was in the Army and deployed to Iraq at the time. The options raised a red flag at the SEC as Scammell, then 24,had never traded Marvel securities before buying the $5,400 in options. After the sale was announced, Marvel's stock rose 25%, giving Scammell a 3,000% profit when he sold off.

Dirty Dancing Remake Reportedly Has No Script, Casting Ideas

The Internet had the time of its life bashing plans for a new Dirty Dancing when Lionsgate announced it would remake the ’80s classic earlier this week. Perhaps that teeth-gnashing was slightly premature; according to director Kenny Ortega, Dirty Dancing is likely to stay in the corner for quite a while before heading to theaters. “We have a big challenge and a long road ahead of us,” Oretga told TheInsider.com. “All I can say is that I hope we can bring something unique and original to help change the naysayers minds about the film.” That would likely start with a script, though the film reportedly doesn’t have one of those. Nor are there any reported casting ideas, though Ortega knows what he doesn’t want. “I’m not looking for someone to fill Patrick Swayze’s shoes, or Jennifer Grey’s shoes. They’re one of a kind and they deserve to be called that.” “Yes!” shout all of the lapsed Dirty Dancing fans who barely gave the original film a second thought before this week’s remake announcement. From the sounds of it, you may want to pencil in the Dirty Dancing reboot for sometime 2013, at the earliest; let’s agree to reconvine here when Dianna Agron gets cast as Baby. · ‘DIRTY DANCING’ REMAKE DIRECTOR SPEAKS! 'Rise From The Planet From The Apes': Rooting For That Other Men

"Rise from the Planet from the Apes" is just one of individuals movies that, unless of course you have been oblivious to major nerd popular culture in the last 4 decades, you enter the theaters with a decent concept of what to anticipate. Spoiler alert: the apes rise, plus they achieve this in glorious fashion. Though as we are relaxing in the cinema entertaining on which has to be probably the most epic troop-rallying that we have observed in the past few years, there is a certain degree of unease that's mounted on it. In the end, by entertaining about the apes, we are entertaining about the demise of mankind. It appears to become a fascinating moral question that's been appearing in films much more frequently -Body that Tom Felton really wants to you to definitely consider -- also it is not the very first time a film has put us within this predicament. Following the jump, we glance at another movies which make you select involving the species and also the other men. "Avatar" It's interesting that in "Avatar," the greatest grossing movie ever, the film's primary character eventually ends up determining to not be human to be able to join an underlying cause he thinks in. There are not many shades of gray in James Cameron's latest blockbuster: the Na'vi are great folk who would like to appreciate character, and also the humans are money-hungry evildoers. It will help a minimum of the humans only get began The planet pandora, and aren't extremely killed like they somewhat deserved to become. "District 9" If "Avatar" gently place the moral dilemma about the moviegoers' plate, then "District 9" forced them at gunpoint to consume up. Not have I left of the cinema praying a lot for any follow up, particularly so Christopher could return together with his fellow "prawns" and kick humanity's collective butt. The truth that "District 9" reflects real-existence struggles occurring in Nigeria only made the problems elevated within the movie much more poignant and relevant. "King Kong" 'Twas beauty wiped out the animal, folks, but more particularly it had been individuals darn humans who just wouldn't understand. In the end, King Kong did not wish to hurt anybody, he wanted the passion for a particular actress who her fellow humans agreed to him like a sacrifice. Though Kong does not survive with the finish from the film, we certainly finish up empathizing with him a lot more than the flick's human figures. Take a look at five "Rise from the Planet from the Apes" Happy Easter !! Exactly what do you think about this moral dilemma these films have given to audiences? Comcast posts higher 2Q earnings

Comcast Corp., the country's largest cable TV company, is bucking the trend among cable companies by making more money from its TV subscribers. While others are seeing declining revenue from the provision of TV signals, Comcast is still eking out some growth. That, along with the sale of still-growing broadband services and strong results from the newly acquired NBC Universal operations, let the company beat expectations with its second-quarter results. The Philadelphia-based company reported Wednesday that its net income of $1.02 billion, or 37 cents per share, for the April to June period, up 16 percent from $884 million, or 31 cents per share, a year ago.Excluding a tax adjustment and costs related to the NBC deal, which closed in January, earnings came to 42 cents per share, beating the 41 cents average expected by analysts polled by FactSet.Revenue rose 51 percent to $14.3 billion. Analysts were expecting $13.7 billion. Revenue from last year's quarter didn't include NBC Universal.Comcast shares rose 27 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $23 in premarket trading after the release of the results. The shares fell 4.7 percent Tuesday.Cable companies have been losing subscribers to satellite TV services for years, and more recently, to phone-company TV services. They've kept their revenue growing by raising prices every year and adding new services like digital video recorders. For Time Warner Cable Inc., the second-largest cable company, that pathway to growth appeared to end in the second quarter, as it reported a 1.3 percent year-over-year drop in revenue from TV services compared to last year. At Charter Communications Inc., the fourth-largest cable company, the drop was 3 percent.Comcast reported a 1.3 percent increase in video revenue in the second quarter, as it earned more money per customer and customer flight slowed slightly versus last year. It still lost 238,000 TV subscribers, slightly more than analysts had expected.Providing TV signals still accounts for more than a third of Comcast's overall revenue, though broadband and phone services make up a growing share of the pie.Comcast bought a majority stake in NBC Universal, parent of the Universal Pictures studio and the NBC and Telemundo broadcast networks in January. The division did well in the quarter, helped by the success of "Bridesmaids" and "Fast Five" in theaters. Advertising revenues also grew. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
